KOSA, Emil Jean, Sr. (1876-1955). Craftsman, painter.
Emil Kosa Sr. was born
in Czechoslovakia on April 20, 1876. Kosa worked with his father making marionettes
for his theater and as an assistant to Alphonse Mucha in Paris for 20
years. Emil Kosa Sr. immigrated to America in 1907 and by 1922 had
settled in Los Angeles with his son, Emil Jr. He made puppets which he
used as models for his paintings. Kosa died in Los Angeles on May 11,
1955.

Emil Kosa Jr. was born in
Paris, France on Nov. 28, 1903. Emil Kosa Jr. moved to the U.S. with his
family at age four. His art studies were begun as a teenager at the
Prague Academy and continued at the California Art Institute in Los Angeles
(1927) and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris (1927-28) under Kupka and
Laurens. Upon his return to Los Angeles, he studied and taught at
Chouinard and Otis Art Institutes. During the last 35 years of his life
he was a special effects artist for 20th Century Fox Studios and in 1963 won an
Oscar for his work on “Cleopatra.” While maintaining a studio-home in Los
Angeles, Emil Kosa Jr. decorated churches, theaters, and private homes and
often taught in nearby Laguna Beach. During his career his work won many
award nationally. His oeuvre includes portraits, seascapes, landscapes,
and florals in oil and watercolor. Emil Kosa Jr. died in Los Angeles on
Nov. 4, 1968.
